From 26 October to 2 November 2026, a group of young people representing AKS participated in the Erasmus+ youth exchange “Vote of Confidence” in Brindisi Montagna, Southern Italy. The project focused on democracy, youth participation, civic engagement, and the importance of having a voice in decisions that affect our lives. However, our participants returned home with much more than a better understanding of democratic processes.
First, a remarkable number of Italian cats received plenty of affection. There were breathtaking mountain views, beautiful natural surroundings, new friendships, and perhaps slightly more rain than anyone had hoped for. Nevertheless, even the unpredictable weather could not prevent this exchange from becoming an unforgettable experience.
And there was one more reason to celebrate: Halloween! While the rest of the AKS team back in Lithuania was preparing for our traditional Halloween madness, our participants got to experience the holiday in Italy. And they certainly didn't miss out – Halloween was celebrated properly and enthusiastically! The international company and festive atmosphere made it another opportunity to have fun, connect, and create shared memories. Apparently, Erasmus+ and spooky celebrations make a pretty good combination.
Throughout the project, participants explored democratic processes, elections, civic participation, disinformation, and media literacy. Through discussions, practical activities, and international teamwork, they examined how opinions are formed, why information should be verified, and how to communicate with people whose perspectives differ from our own. One of the project's central messages was that democracy extends far beyond voting. It also involves speaking up, listening, taking initiative, and accepting responsibility for our communities.
For our Lithuanian participants, however, the people made the greatest impression. The group developed particularly close friendships with the Turkish participants, and what began as an international gathering quickly became a community of people who genuinely enjoyed being together. These connections are among the most valuable outcomes of Erasmus+ youth exchanges: discovering how quickly cultural and geographical differences can become less important once people start sharing experiences.
Special recognition goes to Alex, the exchange facilitator, who received extraordinary praise from our group. His sincerity, enthusiasm, and ability to involve every participant made a lasting impression. Alex did much more than lead activities. He encouraged young people to step outside their comfort zones, express opinions, challenge assumptions, and discover abilities they might not have recognised in themselves. His approach demonstrated the enormous impact that thoughtful, inclusive youth work can have on a young person's confidence and personal development.
The feedback we received after the exchange was particularly meaningful. Several participants described it as the best experience of their lives. Most of those attending an Erasmus+ youth exchange for the first time were already asking about new opportunities and looking for their next international project almost immediately after returning home.
For AKS, this is an especially important outcome. The success of a youth exchange is not measured only through the knowledge gained or the activities completed. It is also reflected in increased confidence, the ability to understand different perspectives, stronger communication skills, and the motivation to continue participating in international learning opportunities.
“Vote of Confidence” demonstrated that active citizenship often begins with something very personal: believing that your voice matters and recognising that you can contribute to change. Sometimes, one international week, a supportive group, and an inspiring facilitator are enough to set that process in motion.
We are grateful to the project organisers, the wonderful Alex, our new Turkish friends, and everyone who contributed to this experience. We hope the friendships, confidence, and motivation developed in Italy will continue to grow long after the exchange!
“Vote of Confidence” was funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme. VšĮ Anglų kalbos studija (AKS) participated as the Lithuanian partner and sending organisation.
